Maccabi Tel Aviv sans titre à la fin de la saison 2007-08. Le nouveau promu Hapoel Holon champion de Super League pour la première fois.

Pour la seconde fois seulement depuis 1969, Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv n'a pas été couronné champion d'Israël. La fois précédente date de 1993.
Pour la première fois de son histoire, une saison s’achève sans aucun titre pour Maccabi. Ils ont perdu en finale de la Coupe contre Hapoel Jerusalem, en finale de l’Euroleague contre CSKA Moscou, et contre Hapoel Holon en finale du Final Four de la Super League.

Cette saison a été tumultueuse pour Maccabi. L’été dernier, Oded Kattash a été nommé coach et le revenant Zvi Sherf a pris le poste de Manager General. Ils ont construit une équipe censée être compétitive sur tous les fronts. Mais les blessures ont perturbé les plans, celle de Tal Burstein d’abord, puis celle de Nikola Vujcic. Maccabi a subi quelques cuisantes défaites en Super League et en Euroleague ; le 1er janvier 2008 Sherf a été nommé coach après la démission de Kattash.

Soudain Maccabi eût l’air d’une équipe différente et les résultats suivirent. Malheureusement, lors du premier match du Top 16 au Pirée, le pivot Marcus Fizer subit une mauvaise blessure qui obligea à son retrait pour le reste de la saison.
Malgré cette déception, Maccabi finit premier de son groupe et élimina Barcelone en quart de finale. Au Final Four de Madrid, ils éliminèrent Montepaschi Siena avant de s’incliner en finale contre CSKA Moscou.

Les vrais problèmes étaient plutôt en championnat national : Maccabi subit 9 défaites et finit second de la saison régulière. En demi-finale du Final Four de Super League, ils ont battu Bnei Hasharon 57-55. En finale, Maccabi menait 65-57 dans le dernier quart-temps mais s’inclina finalement 73-72 devant Hapoel Holon sur un panier victorieux de Malik Dixon à 2,3 secondes de la fin du temps réglementaire. Après 14 titres consécutifs en Super League et trois trophées d’Euroligue, Maccabi finit la saison 2007/08 les mains vides.

Hapoel Holon n’avait jamais gagné le moindre trophée du basket Israëlien. Il y a quelques années, l’équipe a été reléguée en 3e division. Elle est revenue dans l’élite surtout grâce à un homme : Miki Dorsman, à la fois propriétaire et coach du club ces trois dernières années. Après leur accession à la Super League à la fin de la saison dernière, Dorsman a bâti une équipe séduisante et avec l’enthousiasme des supporters, il a réussi ce qui paraissait impossible.
Dorsman a été élu Coach de la saison et l’ailier P.J. Tucker Meilleur Joueur de la saison. Les autres joueurs d’impact : Tre Simmons, Eric Campbell, Elton Brown, Malik Dixon, Moran Roth et Guni Yizraeli.

Pour Maccabi commence maintenant le temps de la reconstruction. Sherf ne gardera probablement pas son poste. Vujcic, après six saisons extraordinaires, a été prévenu que son contrat ne serait pas renouvelé. D’autres joueurs seront libérés et nous aurons un Maccabi complètement new look la saison prochaine.

Only for the second time since 1969, Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv has not been crowned as Israeli Champion. The last time it happened was in 1993.
For the first time ever Maccabi has ended the season with no title. They lost in the State Cup Final to Hapoel Jerusalem, in the Euroleague final to CSKA Moscow and to Hapoel Holon in the Super League Final Four final.

This has been a turbulent season for Maccabi. Last summer, Oded Kattash was named as head coach and veteran Zvi Sherf as General Manager. They built a team which was supposed to do well on all fronts. But injuries to Tal Burstein and later to Nikola Vujcic, spoiled the plans. Maccabi suffered some bad losses in the Super League and Euroleague and on January 1st, 2008, Sherf was nominated as head coach after Kattash resignation.

Suddenly Maccabi looked a different team and the results went accordingly. But in the first game of the Euroleague Top 16 in Piraeus, center Marcus Fizer suffered a bad injury which sidelined him for the rest of the season.
In spite of this setback Maccabi topped the group and eliminated Barcelona in the quarter finals. In the Final Four in Madrid, they beat Montepaschi Siena before bowing out to CSKA.

The problems were on the local front where Maccabi was beaten 9 times and finished second in the table. In the Final Four semi-final they beat Bnei Hasharon 57-55. In the final, Maccabi led 65-57 in the final quarter but eventually was beaten 73-72 by Hapoel Holon with Malik Dixon scoring the winning basket with 2.3 seconds left on the clock. After 14 consecutive Super League titles and three Euroleague trophies, Maccabi ended the 2007/08 season empty handed.

Hapoel Holon has never won any trophies in Israeli Basketball. A few years ago, they were relegated to the third division but came back to the top mainly due to one man – Miki Dorsman, who has been owner and head coach of the team in the last three seasons. After their promotion to the Super League last season, he built an attractive team and with an enthusiastic support from their fans, managed to do what looked impossible.
Dorsman was voted Coach of the season and forward P.J. Tucker, player of the season. Other top players: Tre Simmons, Eric Campbell, Elton Brown, Malik Dixon, Moran Roth and Guni Yizraeli.

For Maccabi now is the time for rebuilding. Sherf will probably not keep his job. Vujcic, after six tremendous seasons, has been notified that his contract will not be renewed. Some other players will be released and we will have a new look Maccabi next season.
